I will try my best.
Maybe we can discuss it later.
That is an interesting idea.
I can commit to delivering the draft by Thursday, but final approval will need my manager's sign-off.
I won't be able to join that project this quarter due to capacity, but I can recommend a colleague.
Thank you for the suggestion — after reviewing our priorities, we've decided to pursue Option A for now.
Sorry for my poor English.
Sorry to trouble you again.
Thank you for your quick response on this.
Could you please clarify the deadline? I want to make sure we align.
Yes?
若只說 "I need to ask my boss" 而不給時間表,會顯得沒有 ownership。
I cannot decide this alone.
My supervisor will think about it.
I'll need to confirm with our director — you can expect a formal response by Wednesday EOD.
I have authority up to USD 10,000; above that requires VP approval, which typically takes one week.
ASAP、soon、at your earliest convenience
I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Let's meet sometime next week.
The project is almost done.
I'll send the revised proposal by Friday, March 8, 5:00 PM Taipei time.
Would Tuesday 2 PM or Wednesday 10 AM work for a 30-minute call?
We're 90% complete — remaining items are UAT and documentation, estimated completion March 15.
台灣人在會議中常避免當面反對,用 "I have a small question" 或沉默代替。
I am not sure I fully understand.
It is not bad, but...
I see the benefits of Plan A, but I'm concerned about the implementation timeline — could we explore a phased rollout?
I respectfully disagree with the pricing assumption in slide 5 — our market data suggests a 10% lower willingness to pay.
To play devil's advocate for a moment, what if the supplier fails to deliver in Q2?
Please kindly do the needful.
Please complete the following actions."
As per your mail...
略顯生硬,可用 "As discussed in your email..." 或 "Regarding your message..."
With regards...
應為 "With regard to" 或簡單用 "Regarding."
Dear Ms. Thompson,
I hope you're doing well. I'm following up on our call yesterday about the renewal contract.
| 台灣常見說法 | 外國同事可能理解 | 建議說法 | |-------------|-----------------|----------| | I will try | I will do it | I can / I cannot by [date] | | Maybe later | We'll discuss soon | I'm not available for this; let's revisit in Q4 | | Interesting | Sounds good | We've decided to pass / pursue | | Sorry to bother | Something is wrong | Thanks for your help on... | | ASAP | Today | By [specific date and timezone] | | Almost done | Ready to ship | X% done; ETA [date] | | Boss said no | Vague rejection | Here's the reason and an alternative |
- 過度使用 We:台灣人愛說 "We think" 分散責任;若你是負責人,適度用 "I recommend" 展現 ownership。
- 沉默同意:點頭不代表同意,重要決議應 verbal confirm: "Just to confirm, we're aligned on Option B?"
- 直接翻譯中文敬語:"Please instruct me" 聽來像下屬用語;平級協作用 "Please let me know your thoughts."
Scenario: Cross-cultural meeting — Taiwan PM and US client
Client (US): So, can you deliver the beta by June 1?
Taiwan PM (too indirect): We will try our best. There are some internal processes.
Client: Great, so we're good for June 1?
Taiwan PM (improved): Thank you for asking directly. June 1 is tight for a full beta. I can commit to a feature-complete beta by June 8, with June 1 as a limited demo for your steering committee. If June 1 is a hard deadline for the board, we'll need to descope two features — I can send options by tomorrow.
Client: June 8 works if we have the demo on June 1. Please send the descope list if needed.
Taiwan PM: Understood. I'll email the timeline and demo scope by end of day today, Taipei time.
Just to make sure we're aligned, you're expecting delivery by X, correct?"
I will consider it.
Let's keep in touch.
We can discuss offline.
Let's discuss offline — I'll send a calendar invite for Thursday."
I'm not in favor of this approach for the reasons I mentioned — can we document the dissent for the record?
To confirm my understanding, we're agreeing to postpone launch to September 15 — correct?
台灣人被稱讚時愛說 "No no, it's nothing" 或 "I'm still learning."
-
❌ "No, my English is terrible."
-
✅ "Thank you — I've been practicing for client calls."
-
❌ "The team did everything, not me."
-
✅ "Thank you — the team worked hard, and I'm proud of what we shipped."
Please revert back at the earliest.
Kindly do the needful.
Please complete the attached form and return it by EOD."
I am waiting for your positive response.
We look forward to your feedback on the proposal."
As discussed telephonically...
用 "As we discussed on our call..."
Let's sync up soon.
Could we sync Tuesday 9 AM Taipei / Monday 8 PM EST?"
I'll work on it tonight.
I'll send an update by 9 AM Taipei time Tuesday."
EOD
Specify whose EOD: "by EOD Friday, Taiwan time (UTC+8)."
- Instead of "Maybe": "At this time, we are unable to..."
- Instead of "I think maybe": "My recommendation is..."
- Instead of "Sorry": "Thank you for flagging this..."
- Instead of "You must": "We would appreciate if you could..."
- Instead of "Why didn't you": "Can you help me understand what blocked this?"
- Instead of "No problem" (when overloaded): "I can take this if we deprioritize task X — please confirm."
當你能從 "I will try" 進化到 "I can deliver X by Y, or Z if scope changes",外國合作方會更信任你,你也更少面對「明明說好了怎麼不一樣」的挫折。
